A psychrometer can be used to measure the relative humidity in the atmosphere. A psychrometer is quite similar to a hygrometer. The basis for this measurement method is formed by the use of two thermometers. The first is a "wet-bulb thermometer" which is enclosed by a moist material and the second one is a "dry-bulb thermometer" which is used to measure the temperature of the air it is exposed to.
By comparing the two temperatures, psychrometer formulas or charts determine the relative humidity as well as other parameters of the environment by calculating the difference between the temperatures. If the air flow of the wet bulb thermometer is sufficient, the measurement with a psychrometer is one of the most accurate. When using a psychrometer, make sure that there is always enough air flowing around the wet bulb thermometer so that evaporation is not hindered by the water vapour that has already formed.
