The pH meter was developed to directly determine the pH value in aqueous media such as wine or beer. Furthermore, the pH meter can also be used for other media with a low conductivity. The waterproof pH tester is used for the fast and accurate measurement of pH. The practical display makes the pH value on the pH meter easy to read. Due to the waterproof and robust housing (IP 67), the pH tester can also be used under difficult conditions. Recalibration always guarantees optimum accuracy and is very easy to perform using the optionally available calibration kits (automatic calibration function without calibration screws - only to be performed via the keyboard).
Information about the instrument
In the production of wine, the pH value is a key indicator for the winemaker. This is because the taste, tolerability and other properties of the wine are strongly dependent on its pH value. The pH value indicates how acidic or basic an aqueous solution such as that in the grape or the wine itself is. This wine pH meter was specially developed to quickly and easily determine the pH value of wine. However, the pH meter can also be used for other aqueous solutions such as beer. In quality control, precise testing of the pH value is a decisive factor.
The waterproof, pen-shaped wine pH meter with its special, external measuring electrode for wine is used for exact measurement of the pH value. The wine pH meter from PCE is particularly characterised by its high accuracy. The measurement range of the wine pH meter is 0.00 to 14.00 pH. Thanks to the large digital display, the measured values are easy to read. To read the measurement results even more conveniently, the display of the wine pH meter can be rotated by pressing a key. The practical data hold function of the wine pH meter allows the measured values to be saved. To save battery power, the wine pH meter has an automatic power off function: when not in use, the meter switches off after ten minutes. The wine pH meter is ideal for use within a temperature range of 0 to 60 °C and at a relative humidity of up to 80 per cent.
Recalibration of the wine pH meter guarantees optimum accuracy and is very easy to perform using the calibration solution (calibration kit with solutions pH4 and pH7). The wine pH meter can be recalibrated automatically via the keyboard. Special calibration screws are not required. The manufacturer also recommends cleaning the electrode with distilled water after each measurement.
In winemaking, the lower the pH, the healthier and more stable the wine. A wine with a low pH value contains more mild tartaric acid. If the winemaker measures a higher pH value, he/she must pay more attention to the stability, microbiology and digestibility of the wine. The pH value of a wine depends on the grape variety, the growing region and the minerals that the grapes absorb through the soil. Ripe grapes naturally contain malic acid, tartaric acid and citric acid. Other acids are formed when the grapes are further processed.
Areas of application
For quality-oriented producers, the pH value is an important parameter for the character and quality of the wine. This is because the chemical and microbial stability of the wine depends on the pH value. A special pH meter is therefore irreplaceable in the production of wine. PCE Instruments’ wine pH meter combines user-friendliness and reliability with a compact design. Its simple operation, the waterproof housing and the flexible possibilities of application make the wine pH meter irreplaceable in the production of wine and provide the winemaker with important decision-making aids within a very short time. The meter is preferably used by winegrowers, in the laboratory and in research applications. Due to its easy use, it is also suitable for inexperienced users. Thanks to the waterproof and robust housing (IP 67), the wine pH meter is ready for use at any time, even under difficult conditions.
Accessories
Additional electrodes are available from PCE Instruments to complement the wine pH meter. The manufacturer recommends moist storage for some types of electrodes. The correct storage solution is available from PCE Instruments.
pH electrodes drift over time which can cause measurement errors. To ensure high accuracy, the wine pH meter should be calibrated regularly with the calibration solution available from PCE Instruments (pH 4.01 and pH 7.01).
PCE Instruments also offers the CAL-PCE-PH ISO calibration certificate for pH meters. For ideal cleaning of the wine pH meter, the PCE-GCS-500 pepsin/hydrochloric acid cleaning solution (500 ml) is available from PCE Instruments.
