Modern measuring devices carry out not only a measuring function, but also a protective one. CO meter is an example of such devices: small, handheld, but providing very valuable information related to the air quality, which, as known, plays a crucial role for well-being and healthy environment.

Peculiarity of CO is that is transparent, but is very poisonous. The air around consists of many gases and contaminants which have both, natural and industrial origin, the concentration of them is important and requires permanent monitoring. Carbon monoxide is one of the most widely spread contaminants and it is quickly formed as a result of combustion, for example, of wood, coal, paper, oil or fuel, which occurs in many industries, at the plants, factories, boiler rooms, foundries; in big amounts it is contained in exhaust gases from vehicles with internal combustion engines (a very widely-spread source of the artificial CO).

CO is dangerous to humans – that is one of the main reasons why monitoring of its level is of paramount importance wherever people are present and work in such environment over longer time periods. When CO gets into the body of the humans, it causes a very dangerous reaction, in the result of which the oxygen transportation is no longer possible, because iron atom gets a stronger bond with the CO molecules in the blood hemoglobin than with the oxygen molecules. The higher the concentration of poisonous gases in the air, the more aggravating consequences affect the organism. United all together, they bring much more damage than when they are present in the air in small amounts separately. Particularly, carbon monoxide negatively influences the well-being and ability to think clearly. The person may get sleepy and when the concentration of CO in the air becomes too high, may even lose conscience. Naturally, the concentration of CO is extremely low in the air and this has no influence at all, as only the concentration starts growing, it should be taken under control. For all those who work in the boiler rooms, or with the internal combustion engines, a serious danger to their health may appear if they spend a long time there and inhale the air regularly. The fact that it has no color and smell may lead to the loss of time, and people may fail to notice its high concentration in the air. One of the examples, when huge amounts of CO2 and CO are released into the air is the fire, but in this case, it is evident that breathing systems should be protected.

If people deal with the bad air professionally, the monitoring of the air quality is mandatory. Small CO meters can be easily installed in the proximity to the workplace and thus, the reliable control – provided. Automotive industry workers, servicemen at the technical stations, mechanics, firemen, miners, welders and many others deal with sometimes dangerous concertation of CO, because of their professional occupation. High-class protective clothes, appropriate well-functioning ventilation, limited exposure time – these are the compulsory measures that each employer should take to protect the employees from any health risks. CO does not accumulate in the body, so it may be very helpful to provide good airing in case of emergency. CO meter sounds an immediate alarm when the set limit is exceeded which allows for an appropriate reaction. Application of the carbon monoxide meter ensures that the heavy poisoning of people (which may even result in death) does not take place at all, in spite of their occupation. This helps to avoid accidents in the workplace and organize the working, even the most complicated industrial process, in the most optimal way.
